Well, we’ve done it. We’ve moved to Portland.
The last four months have been full of transition. Although I haven’t exactly been in Timbuktu (or, some village outside of Timbuktu that doesn’t actually have internet), writing has nevertheless seemed out of reach…until now.
We packed up our apartment, put the terrified cats in the car and the canoe on top of it, and set off across the country. We partly unpacked at my parents’ house, looked for jobs, and shopped for a place of our own. We bought a house.
Ron found a teaching job. He started the job, and I moved us into the house on the same day he started. He found a different, more permanent job, and I installed a garbage disposal, cabinets in the bathroom, new locks on all the doors, motion-sensor lights outside, tall bookcases in the sunroom, and new electrical outlets in the bedroom. We had the garage partly finished and I painted and caulked it.
Not having ever touched wiring, plumbing, or tools like caulk guns before, I immersed myself in books and DIY YouTube videos and spent hours and hours wandering the cavernous aisles of Home Depot. It wasn’t exactly what I’d expected to be doing with half of 2014, but hey, it was stuff I’d always wanted to know how to do!
Now we’re more or less moved in. And my New Year’s Resolution—one of many—is to get writing again. Including my blogs.
Happy New Year!
